Should Willard Build a Sewage Treatment Plant, or Not?
A discussion is on the Board’s agenda for this evening.
It’s been awhile since I’ve attended the Willard Board of Aldermen meetings, but I do keep an eye on the meeting agendas and minutes.
At the June 26th Board meeting, Alderman Troy Smith and Alderman Scott Swatosh requested a meeting to discuss whether the city should continue to send sewage to Springfield or explore building its own sewage treatment plant.
The City of Willard sends sewage to Springfield for treatment at a substantial annual cost projected to be $600,000 in 2023—a dollar amount that does not include infrastructure maintenance and upgrades.
Willard’s sewage treatment contract with Springfield includes an 8% annual increase, with annual projected costs of:
$648,000 in 2024
$699,000 in 2025
$755,000 in 2026
$801,000 in 2027
$849,000 in 2028
An attempt to build a sewage treatment facility in Willard in 2009, at the behest of former Mayor Jamie Schoolcraft, failed due to lack of public support.
Discussion of the development of a Willard sewage treatment facility is on the Board’s agenda for this evening, Monday, July 10th at 7 P.M.
